In
1961 Sam Barr bought a 2-year-old TB colt by the Aga Khans
‘Princes Game’ out of the mare Welton.
This colt was to hunt with Ledbury, take Sam’s 12-year-old
daughter to Pony Club and eventually on to the Badminton Horse
Trials.
He was Welton Gameful and was to found the Welton
Stud Legacy.
Today the Welton prefix is synonymous with Champion Event
Horses.
He was to produce 3 son s to stand at stud and compete to
advanced horse trials – Welton Louis, Welton Apollo
and the most famous of them all Welton Crackerjack.
Since the creation of the British horse database, Welton
Crackerjack has always been the leading sire of event
horses. His progeny have amassed to over 6000 points - 2,000
more than any other stallion.
He is the only stallion in the world, himself a four star
horse to have sired the winners of the world’s three
most prestigious Four Star Events, Badminton, Burghley and
Kentucky.
There has been no other event sire to achieve such success
with such a wide variety of mares. Wherever he went he was
the universal favourite for his exceptional temperament and
character along with athleticism and jumping ability.
To quote Blyth Tait about bringing a Welton colt to NZ “You
can’t go past Crackerjack because he has left so many
out and out champions”.
For the first time available in NZ, with the blessing of Sam
and Linda Barr, Craighaven Sporthorses presents the 3-year-old
colt LORD WELTON, the last son born to Welton Crackerjack.
He is 7/8 English TB, 1/8 Irish Draught, giving him the size
and bone to cross well with our NZ mares.
Just newly under saddle he shows many of his famous sires
attributes. His movement is light yet powerful. He has a wonderful
trot and a ground-covering canter. Lord Welton is a compact,
correct young horse with superb temperament. He has shown
himself to be very bold yet sensible.
Lord Welton is very fertile with 100% in foal from their first
insemination with shipped semen in 2003.
His dam is Legendary Lady by Reprimand – a TB sire never
unplaced in his racing career and winner of half of all of
his starts before retiring to Stud. Legendary Lady’s
granddam is the mare Celina by Crepello and the winner of
the Irish Oaks, a premier race for 3 year olds in the UK.
Lord Welton represents a major coup for the breeding of sporthorses
in NZ and we hope the British live to regret the day he ever
left their shores!
