Our foundation sire at Craighaven was Waingata, born in Northland
in 1983. He is by Aberlou,
arguably the most prepotent eventing sire in New Zealand. Historically
Aberlou was rated second for sires of eventers in NZ and third
for show jumpers. Aberlou’s most famous son was Messiah,
World Three Day Eventing champion at Stockholm, and bronze medallist
at Barcelona. He is also the sire of Delta who represented New
Zealand at the Atlanta Olympics.
Waingata’s dam was by Lochiel Fair who goes back to Fairs
Fair and Le Filou, a stallion who influence has been recognised
in the racing industry.
Waingata
was predominately thoroughbred, but his grand dam was a broken
coloured stationbred mare who was the dam of the intermediate
eventer “Pick n Mix”. Waingata’s full brother
was exported to the UK with Blyth Tait. Waingata
has crossed well with all types of mares. His TB progeny include
CH Artful Dodger (exported to Taiwan) and eventers Craighaven
and CH Luther. His Clydesdale and crossbred progeny have proven
their worth showjumping and on the hunt field. Waingata has also
left some promising ponies including the B grade showjumper Symphony.
