Sadly
our foundation Stallion Waingata (known to most as “Trev”)
died at home at Craighaven in January 2005, at 22 years of age.
Waingata (by Aberlou)
was purchased as a young colt from Donny Harrison in Northland
and was brought down to the Bay of Plenty where he had a very
brief career as a racehorse in training! The jockey noted that
the horse was not going to make a racehorse but he was one of
the nicest horses he had ridden (not really good news for an aspiring
racehorse owner!). Trev came back to Craighaven and started covering
a few stationbred mares that had also moved Southwards with the
Gow family. The early foals were immediately popular for their
temperament and ability to turn a hand to most tasks including
Ponyclub, showjumping, trekking, endurance, eventing and hunting.
Trev has produced pony’s that have showjumped to Grandprix
level, Advanced eventers, many awesome hunters and has had progeny
exported to Taiwan, Japan, and America.
A few years ago a local stallion parade was held and Trev was
brought in from his paddock and given a spruce up before his big
foray to the neighbouring racecourse for the parade. He astounded
us all by being a perfect gentleman from the clipping, to the
day spent in the yard trying to entice all over for a scratch
– he looked the perfect ponyclub hack rather than a Stallion
that had not been ridden, or in fact off the property, in 14 years.
A supurb temperament that many have had the advantage of enjoying
through his progeny over the years.
So heres thanks from us all, to Trev…Ave…

Zorro
and CH Montreau |
Dec 11 2004
Zorro (aka Martin) and CH Montreau at the Christmas Showjumping
Competition held at McIntosh Stables in Taneatua. The local newspaper
reported that.... "The masked marvel, aka Martin Gow, made
an entrance worthy of any Hollywood version of the movie, scattering
all in his way..."
CH Montreau was bred at Craighaven and is by Kabo
Armadeus out of a mare by Red Nib. He had a great year out
in the hunt field last year and above is part of his rigorous
(but varied!) preseason schooling before he takes on his new job
as Deputy Masters horse (with Martin) in preparation for the coming
season with the EBOP Hunt.
